Upkeep of Fences

Fences have many purposes including privacy, safety and decor. No matter what the fence is intended to be used for, it can still experience damages, especially in certain weather conditions.. In order to lower the visible damages and ensure the health of the fence, there are precautions you can take. Here are three ways to keep your fence in good shape:

Rust Prevention

Especially on iron fences, rust can easily appear over time and can quickly deteriorate the fence. Rust is formed due to moisture over time and it is important to keep an eye out for signs of rust on iron fences. If rust is present, it can easily be scraped off with a fine wire brush. For more serious cases of rust, the wire brush can also be paired with a rust neutralizer. The rust should dissolve and leave the fence unharmed. A stainless steel primer can be used to enhance the metal on the fence and used as a barrier to any rust that may form.  To avoid any further rust, regularly check on the fence and clean any residue that may be sitting on the metal.

Oil for Wood Fences

For wooden fences, over time the wood can dry out and look dull. For a quick fix, you can apply some wood oil or an oil stain to the fence that will moisten the wood and add strength to it. To prevent the wood from peeling but also add some shine or color to the fence, you can use an oil based paint that will do the same thing as normal oil but gives you the freedom to color your fence. This can be done whenever the fence starts to appear dull, and you can easily bring it back to life.

Routine Cleaning

It is no surprise that fences get dirty. Due to the weather, location or activities presented in the area, fences can endure a lot. Routine cleaning can be beneficial in many ways including keeping the fence pleasing and preventing a build up of dirt that will shorten the fence’s longevity. With just warm water, soap and a brush, a fence can easily be cleaned. It is ideal to clean a fence once every six months, or when needed.
