Painting vs Staining: Which is Better?

When it comes to the appearance of fences, one question many people have is if they should paint or stain the fence. Both have certain benefits and are ultimately up to you. Whether you want a completely new style, or just a protective barrier, staining or painting the fence can be beneficial.

Staining

Most people stain their fence to change the color, while still being able to see the texture of the fence. Most fence stains soak into the wood leaving the texture behind but still changing the color of the wood. The stain also creates a barrier on the wood, keeping it healthy. Overtime, the stain may fade, calling for a new coat. The stain itself lasts a long time, depending on the location and weather. No matter what look is desired, fence stains come in various colors and depths, making it easy to find the right shade for you. Staining can be more expensive up front, and can obstruct the natural beauty of the fence, but is the healthiest option for your fence.

Painting

Painting a fence is perfect for someone who wants to completely change the appearance of the fence. In a blink of an eye, a fence can look different, giving off a new aesthetic. However, painting a fence requires lots of upkeep. Due to climate conditions or over time, the paint can chip, thus requiring maintenance. Also, paint on a fence restricts the wood from breathing making it easier for the wood to rot in the future. Once a fence is painted, the texture will be hidden but the color chosen will be prominent. Painting requires routine maintenance and has it’s cons, but will give you the creative freedom to customize your fence.

Which is better?

Both options have many pros and cons, but it is up to you and your desired look. Take into consideration the cost, maintenance and longevity of the fence before making your decision.
