How to Restore Your Wrought Iron Fence

Wrought iron fences can be a beautiful addition to any yard, but only if maintained well. When exposed to the elements, wrought iron is susceptible to rusting, which can dull its appearance and lifespan. Maintenance or installation can be costly, so it is important to treat your wrought iron fence regularly.

Follow these 3 steps to maintain the beauty of your wrought iron fence:

Step 1: Remove the rust

You can remove flaking rust with a dry wire brush. You should follow up with a dry paintbrush, sandpaper, and a combination of water and rust remover solution. When scrubbing with the wire brush, use circular motions. This process is tedious but will provide a smooth surface to later paint.

Step 2:  Prep and prime your fence for paint

Take a steel wool pad and wipe down the fence to refresh its appearance, then follow up with a damp sponge. Once the fence has dried, apply one coat of rust-resistant paint primer. Allow the primer to dry before proceeding.

Step 3:  Paint your fence

For this step, you may either re-paint your fence or simply touch it up. Apply two even coats of rust-resistant paint, allowing time to dry in between coats.
